Thule 517 Peloton Roof Bike Rack Reviews
When we heard Thule Racks was discontinuing the 589 VeloVise we were initially skeptical that they could replace it with something better. The good news is they have merely added a nice long neck for clearance when loading a bicycle with a disc brakes/suspension fork set up onto the 517 Peloton. The discontinued 589 didn't allow you to carry these types of bikes. All the same twin cam clamping engineering is retained on the 517 Peloton. We find this system to be superior when carrying different bikes on the same rack. The traditional style adjusting skewer/quick release design forces you to turn the skewer knob everytime to find the correct tightness for each bike fork you mount onto the rack. The 517 makes it much easier to make the adjustment to accommodate different bike forks by simply adjusting the thumbwheel. This carrier did lose a mark due to the occasional failure of the twin cam to adjust evenly to clamp both the right and left fork, and you have to do some extra fidgeting of the thumbwheel to get it right. We feel that anyone carrying different bikes regularly on the same bike carrier should seriously consider investing a little more money and getting the 518 Echelon instead. This high-end model has an equalized twin cam and adjusting knob that takes care of this issue.
