Yakima Kayak Stacker Kayak Rack Reviews
The Kayak Stacker does one thing and it does it very well, stacking whitewater kayaks neatly on their sides so you can carry up to four of them at a time. We've even added a fifth or sixth at times when in a pinch and the cross bars are long enough, 66" or 78" crossbars to be exact. Actually, we lied about it only carrying whitewater kayaks. The 8004036 Kayak Stacker works with any plastic molded kayak, recreational sea kayaks for instance. It's just not as easy to get them up on their sides to stack them and get the straps secured as it is with whitewater kayaks. However, if a couple of people are loading then these bigger and/or heavier kayaks will load pretty easily on the Kayak Stacker too. One thing this kayak rack lacks is folding down masts when not hauling any boats on top. It kinda looks funny driving around with two "lightning rods" sticking up from the roof. But a nice clever trick we figured out is to just slightly loosen the hex bolts and tilt the masts down and tighten. This is possible on Yakima Rack round bars. Thule Racks 830 The Stacker folds down, but if it didn't you couldn't tilt the masts down because Thule Racks uses square bars. Note that on factory racks you won't be able to tilt the Kayak Stacker down if the crossbars are elliptical in shape. We also needed to figure out which Horizontal MightyMounts we needed for each factory rack configuration. Kind of a pain (Yakima 18H MightyMounts on Ford Taurus wagon factory rack, 23H on Toyota 4Runner etc.). The Thule 830 'The Stacker' comes with universal mounting clamps for connecting to factory racks, a feature that makes the Thule 830 a little more convenient.
